This is a charming chatelaine from the early 20th century. It is a silverplate paper notebook with pencil and attached waist hook. The front of the main piece has repoussé decoration of the well-known motif “Angels Head’s” by Sir Joshua Reynolds. At the top of the angel’s heads there is a hinge and what appears to be a Scottish thistle with foliage. This piece is likely to have been made in the United Kingdom but worn in Australia. The back of the notebook has a decorative floral edging but is plain in the centre. It appears unmarked. The integral pencil at the side slips through two long loops to keep it in place and keep the notebook closed – it currently contains an original lead which can be retracted. Once it is opened, there is a special treat as there are multiple messages that date from 1908 to 1927. The pages are of paper (darkened with age) with gilt edgings. The notations are in pencil. One very interesting note dated 1927 documents the Melbourne Cup winners (this is a very well-known horse race in Australia, also known as The Race that Stops a Nation!). The winner was Trivalve, followed by Silvius and Son of Mine - this has been checked and is documented to be correct. It is unusual to find such a message still present in these delightful little notebooks. The condition is very good for age. It is of interest that a photograph is used in my book, “Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance” showing an Edwardian lady wearing an identical notebook (see image). This would be a special item to add to a collection of early aide memoirs, or a general collection of fascinating fashion accessories. Notebook plus pencil 2.75 ins (7cm) x 1.85 ins (4.5cm). Length 6.75 ins. Weight 56 grams.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $32.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
