This most desirable early fountain pen by the prestigious maker, Mabie, Todd & Bard, is fashioned as a chatelaine pen. It is marked Sterling on the pen and there are English hallmarks on the swivel and pin - the pin is also marked for L.S & Co (presumably for Lionel Smith & Co), Birmingham, 1912. The pen itself is decorated with a fine barleycorn pattern. There is one cartouche with the initials D.A.P., which were probably for the owner. A larger cartouche states The Swan Pen as well as Pat.Feb 8 81. Feb 21.82. Mar 888 Mabie, Todd & Bard New York Sterling. This would mean that the pen was made in the United States. The cap is fitted with two chains passing to a ring attached to a swivel and security pin also of sterling silver and marked as stated above. This example has the small pin present on the pen that fits into a twist lock band on the cap. It is understood that one needs care unlocking the pen as it is possible to damage the mechanism, as this is a different process to many other similar pens. The actual nib is labelled Mabie Todd and the undersurface is marked Swan (see image). This pen, when acquired, was in a fitted leatherette box lined with silk and red velvet. It is labelled on the silk for Mabie Todd & Co, “Swan” Fountain Pen, London with other capital cities beneath. There is a dropper present but sadly the rubber at some stage has melted and caused it to run into the dropper and leak onto the lining of the top of the box - the condition of the box is otherwise very good for age. With the slightly different company logo it is not known whether the box and pen originally started life together. The pen itself is in excellent condition for age but it is not known the state of the bladder. This would be a fabulous addition to a collection of elite pens and is a real treasure. Box measures 6 ins (15.2cm) x 1.8 ins (3.1cm). Weight 62 grams.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $48.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
