This is a combined item of early fountain pen with a sterling silver chatelaine pen holder. The pen is of the classic patterned vulcanized rubber made by the W & B Company in London, with a 14 carat gold nib with over and under feed. It is marked 14 carat on the nib and the pen is marked The “W & B” Pen No 5. It is contained within its original box which includes a vast amount of print and labels with details of the maker and how to use the pen (see images). This would have originally been held in a specific pen holder of the chatelaine style, which would be worn from the waist or inside of a waistcoat attached with the use of a chatelaine plaque or safety pin. The pen has been placed within such a holder. This holder is of decorative sterling silver, marked T.H.V., presumably for Thomas Henry Vale, Birmingham, 1906. The cap also has a lion mark and possibly other rubbed marks. Holder and cap are attached with chains with a ring at the very end. This pen fits nicely into the sterling silver holder and completes both items. It is possible, with the pen inside the holder, to place them together inside the box although these two pieces did not start together (see image). The box is scuffed and has a fragile lid with one short end missing and with other splits, and the labelling and the box have multiple ink marks but the overall messages are readable. Inside the lid are some written initials, presumably made by the first owner. It is not known the condition of the bladder of the pen. It can be hard at times to find original pens and original pen holders so it is a special feature to have one of each appear compatible. Please note that these pen holders are often sold as thermometer holders - but this style was created for such a typical pen, whereas thermometer holders are much more slender to hold the fragile glass more securely. These two now combined items were illustrated separately in my book, “Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance” on page 243.
Box measures 5.75 ins (14.5cm) x 1.25 ins (3.2cm). Weight 44 grams.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $33.50 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
