This is a particularly interesting early pen by Mabie Todd & Co. as it is boxed with instructions, and includes the pen plus a dropper. This example was never intended to be worn on a chatelaine but could have been placed within a specific holder for pen chatelaines. The pen is of black vulcanised rubber with lift-off cover. There are two gold bands on the main pen which are labelled 18K. There is the mark of a swan with trademark on both the pen and the cap, and the pen is also marked THE “SWAN” PEN, MABIE TODD & CO, MADE IN ENGLAND. The nib is unmarked or possibly stained and has the classic over and under feed. Inside the box is the original dropper with rubber (which is significantly perished). The box itself is red in colour with the Swan Fountain Pen logo on the top and an image of the nib. This also states that these were made in London and New York. There were several outlets in England for this company, and this is described on one side. On the other side is a listing of an extract from Conditions of Sale with further details. Inside the box, the base has an image of a pen plus some directions as to the use of the pen and further details for filling and general care of the item is pasted on the inside of the top of the box. On the bottom of the box are further instructions including a space for the owner’s name and address. The condition is very good for age apart from the aforementioned problem with the dropper, and some ink staining of the box itself. The pen appears to be in very good condition but it is not known the state of the bladder. This is a fascinating example as it includes the gold bands on the patterned vulcanised rubber, and the fact that it is contained in its original box with quite detailed instructions. Box measures 5.5 ins (14cm). Weight 36 grams.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $33.50 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
