This is a very special find. The piece is a fine black shagreen scissors’ case with restrained decoration of rows of silver (possibly steel) clouté
decoration. There is also a suspension ring at the top for attachment to a chatelaine or ribbon to be worn from the waist. It has a press stud mechanism for opening and inside is revealed a fitting and original pair of steel scissors (which cut to the tips). The hinge is secure. The overall condition is very good for age although two of the tiny studs are missing and there is a slight unevenness in the leather close to the tip. The scissors have minimal discolouration but open and close nicely. This lovely etui would be a super addition to a collection of early needlework tools or a collection of pieces showing the amazing craftsmanship of our ancestors. Maximum length 3.5 ins (8.8cm). Weight 12 grams.
This item appears in my book, “Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance” on page 38.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $48.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
