An early 19th century mauchline snuff box with satirical theme featuring a tailor cutting off the tails of a gentleman customer’s coat, hence the caption “Cutting short his Tale”. It seems to have been a popular theme for mauchline boxes to have caricatures making fun of society. The interior retains most of its original foil lining. The transfer is a little faded and the box shows some wear appropriate for age. Length 3 ins (7.6cm), width 1.77 ins (4.5cm), height 0.79 ins (2cm). Weight 22 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 183.
