Exceptional set of Panama Souvenir cards made by USPC, c.1910. Of the several Panama Souvenir decks, this is the set with the “Chagres River View” on the backs. The faces of the cards depict scenes of Panama and of work on the canal. The cards are accompanied by a paper insert that describes in considerable detail what is depicted on each card, and the organizing theme of each suit.
The deck has 52 suited cards, plus a Joker, plus an unbacked extra card with a map on each side. The cards are wide, measuring 89mm x 63mm, with gold gilt around, and, along with the paper insert, they come in the original telescope type box.
The cards are in pristine condition, with all gold gilt intact, except that the unbacked, 2-sided map card has very slight indentations at one corner; they may not be visible in the photographs, but they are there. The paper insert is in very good condition with stress along the lines of the folds, but intact and quite clean for 100+ year old paper. The box is in fair to good condition, structurally intact, but with wear and soiling that impact the sample card as well as the box as a whole.
