Excellent set of one of the rarest, most coveted and most beautiful of the Fournier special sets, “Historic Iranian Designs,” made by Fournier c.1962 featuring the brilliant designs of V. Romanowski de Boncza of Tehran – designs that were first used by De La Rue in the 1930s in a deck commissioned by Royal Iranian Government Playing Card Monopoly (Ministry of Finance). The court cards depict rulers, warriors, etc. from different dynasties: Spades, the Sassanides Dynasty; Hearts, the Safavides Dynasty, Diamonds, the Mongols—Iikhani Dynasty; and Clubs, Afshars Dynasty. The Aces depict a standard, trophies and embroidery from the same dynasties.
Each deck has 52 cards, plus 2 Jokers, and the set includes a paper insert describing the historical origins of the designs. The cards are wide, measuring 89mm x 62mm, with gold gilt at the corners, and come in the original box.
The decks are in excellent condition, lightly used if at all, except that the 8 of Diamonds in one of the decks has a crease (separately pictured). The paper insert is also in excellent condition. The box has damage at one corner on the top lid, and slight soiling.
