Deck made c.1989 by Carta Mundi to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Turnhout, featuring designs by artist Jos. Snoeck. As such, it is the second such commemorative deck made by Carta Mundi which is why I have given it the Roman numeral “II.” (See, this shop, #T00002863) The Aces are scenic, and I assume depict Turnhout locations that figured in the Battle. However the court cards are standard Belgian pattern courts.

For those unfamiliar with Dutch history (as am I), Wikipedia has this to say about the famous battle that led to the Brabant Revolution:

“The Battle of Turnhout (October 27, 1789) was a battle which took place at Turnhout between the Habsburg Empire and Belgian revolutionaries which led to the Brabant Revolution and led to a brief period of independence for Belgium, known at the time as the Southern Netherlands.

“News of the victory at Turnhout spread over the Flanders and Brabant and resistance increased. The Brabant Revolution became a reality. The towns of Ghent, Diest, Tirlemont and Brussels fell to the rebels. Austrian forces withdrew to the Duchy of Luxembourg.

“On December 31, Brabant declared its own independence and was joined, in January 1790, by many other Belgian states leading to the creation of the United States of Belgium.”

The deck has 52 suited cards, plus 2 Jokers, plus an extra card introducing the deck. The cards are slightly small bridge size, measuring 87mm x 56mm, and come in the original box.

The cards are “as new” and the box is in excellent condition, clean but with very minor shelf wear.

Thanks for visiting.
