One of the many Quartette sets made in or about 1900 by United States Playing Card Co. through its affiliate/brand, known for a time as “The Fireside Game Co.” This game, titled “Game of Artists” and published in 1897, features art works by famous artists of Italy, France, England and Germany. It is interesting that American artists are not represented.
The game has 52 cards – 13 “families” of 4 paintings by a given artist – and is accompanied by a paper insert that is glued to the underside of the lid of the box. The cards are wide, measuring 88mm x 62mm, and are housed in the original box.
The cards are in excellent condition. They are very lightly used, with modest edge wear, but surprisingly clean. The instructions appear to be in excellent condition for paper that is 100 years old, although, as noted, it is glued to the underside of the box lid. The box itself is in fair condition only, with a chunk missing from the lid, and with tape on one of the corners and needed on two others; it is reasonably clean.
