Angel (U.S. Games Systems) "Ukiyoe Tarot," Tarot Cards, Koji Furuta Designs, c.1982
Excellent set of the exceptionally beautiful "Ukiyoe Tarot" cards, published by U.S. Games Systems, and printed by Angel Playing Card Manufacturing Co., Ltd. of Japan, based upon original designs by Koji Furuta. The faces of the cards very successfully combine the "floating world" artistry of Ukiyoe cards with the traditional symbolism of the tarot.
The deck has the usual 78 cards: 22 major arcana, including the Fool, and 56 minor arcana in the traditional four suits, coins, cups, batons, swords. The symbols chosen for the four suit symbols are traditional Japanese: the swords are traditional Japanese swords; the batons/wands are ceremonial scepters used by priests; cups are hand-lacquered wooden bowls; and the coins are like those used in the Edo Period (c.1600-1868) of Japanese history. The cards are tarot size, measuring 114mm x 63mm. They come in the original box. In addition, there is a wonderful accompanying booklet written by Stuart Kaplan, with information about ukiyoe, tarot and this deck.
The cards, booklet and box are in excellent, “as new” condition.
