Mint, sealed double deck of wonderful advertising cards for Starbucks, featuring characters from Gary Trudeau's "Doonesbury" comic strip. In particular, the cards celebrate the run in 2000 for President of Duke, Zonker’s “Uncle” and a voracious consumer of drugs and alcohol. When first published and sold in Starbucks stores, the net proceeds from the sale of the cards went to U.S. literacy programs. I do not know who made the cards, and presume that they were a joint venture between Trudeau and Starbucks. The faces of the court cards, Aces, Jokers and some of the pip cards can be seen at the World Web Playing Card Museum website (WWPCM #02506).
Those familiar with the "Doonesbury" strip will recognize the characters: Duke is on the Kings and Jokers; the Queens show “Honey” Huan; the Jacks are Zonker; and Roland Hedley is the Ace of Spades. [I do not know who is shown on the other Aces] The design of the pip cards is also somewhat original.
Each deck has 52 cards, plus 2 Jokers. The cards are poker size, measuring 89mm x 64mm, and come in the original box. As noted the cards and box are mint and sealed.
A year previous in 1999, Starbucks published another Doonesbury set of cards, focused more generally on all of the characters in the strip, and these earlier cards are also for sale in this shop (T00003378).
