Grimaud "Jeu Louis XV" Playing Cards, No. 1502, w/ Falconer Joker, c.1920
Pristine, beautiful deck of Grimaud's justly celebrated "Jeu Louis XV" cards, No. 1502, in the original box, including the Falconer Joker, featuring gorgeous court cards in period dress. This set has reddish backs, but is housed in a Grimaud Louis XV box that was made for a deck with blue backs. Fournier dates this deck to 1890, and it has the 1890 tax stamp, but the cards were made for many years, and I believe that the decks with the Joker date later than those without it. I think that 1920 is closer to correct.
The deck has 52 cards, plus the Falconer Joker noted. The deck uses metallic gold, and has gold gilt all around, giving the deck a very rich look and feel. The cards are slightly large, measuring 92mm x 60mm and come in an original Grimaud Louis XV No. 1502 box. However the box is not original to this particular deck, because the box originally housed a deck with blue backs and this deck has red backs. It appears that this deck was a companion to a deck with red backs, and that the boxes were switched at some point in the 100-year history of the cards. The box is telescope type, with an inner and outer box.
All cards are in gorgeous condition, “as new” or very nearly so. The box – albeit the wrong color – is in good, perhaps very good, condition. It is structurally sound, but there is wear and light soiling to the outer box, with a notable abrasion on one side.
There is a pristine, near perfect set of these cards for sale in this shop, also with the Falconer Joker, and in the correct box (T00003167).
