Gorgeous double deck set of cards made by Carta Mundi for Alfred Dunhill, depicting scenes and characters from La Traviata, the famous Verdi opera, brilliantly designed by Erté. Each suit is based upon a particular scene from the opera: Hearts, Act I; Diamonds, Act II, Scene I; Clubs, Act II, Scene II; and Spades, Act III. There is a brief, but very helpful, paper insert that describes what is depicted on each card.
Each deck has 52 suited cards, plus 2 Jokers, plus an extra card that announces the deck. The cards are wide, measuring 89mm x 64mm, with beautiful gold gilt around. The cards and paper insert are housed in a beautiful custom, leather (or faux leather) covered box, with linen pull ties to assist in removing the cards.
The cards are mint; one deck is still wrapped and the other appears only to have been removed for inspection, as it is perfect. The box and paper insert are in excellent superb condition, “as new” or very nearly so.
