Delightful and somewhat rare deck of cards, celebrating Richard Wagner and featuring humorous, charming illustrations relating to his career and operas. The Jokers depict contemporaries Nietzsche, Liszt and King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The court cards depict characters from the operas. The Aces incorporate illustrations of buildings inside their suit symbols – perhaps Bayreuth Festspielhaus and/or buildings that figure in the operas themselves. The maker of the cards and the artist that should be credited with the designs are unknown, but I believe that the cards are German. [If forced to guess, I would probably identify Bielefelder as the maker]. These are not the cards made by Muller, based upon designs by Melchior Annen (see this shop, T00003459).
The deck has 52 suited cards, plus the 3 Jokers noted. The cards are slightly large bridge size, measuring 91mm x 59mm, and come in a plastic box that is not original to the cards.
The cards are “as new.” FWIW, the plastic box is in excellent condition.
