Standard “Park Lane Hotel Apartments (Tapestry Room)” Playing Cards, c.1926
Mint deck of gorgeous cards made by Standard Playing Card Co. c.1926 for the then quite fashionable Park Lane Hotel Apartments in New York, featuring backs derived from one of the seven 17th century Flemish tapestries that adorned the walls of the famous Tapestry Dining Room. These cards were not marketed commercially, but were given to guests at the Park Lane.
The deck itself 52 suited cards (including a unique and beautiful Ace of Spades), plus a stunning original Joker, plus a backed card with auction bridge scoring, plus a card that introduces the tapestry scene on the backs of the cards (i.e., “Belisarius receiving the dignity of consul from the Emperor Justinian”). The cards are bridge size, measuring 89mm x 57mm, with gold gilt around. and come in a beautiful original box with a linen pull attached to the lid.
The cards are in mint condition. The box is in very good condition, quite clean for its age. However, 2 corners have been taped with small pieces of clear transparent tape, and the "hinge" edge along the top where the lid closes is weakening and somewhat vulnerable.
These are extremely elegant and beautiful cards.
