Beautiful early treatise on playing cards, Mrs. John King Van Rensselaer's "The Devil's Picture-Books: A History of Playing Cards," including 24 lovely illustrations, most in vivid color. Particularly interesting is the book's discussion of North American Indian cards of the Apache tribe, cut out of deerskin and painted, with 3 illustrations devoted to them. One of the 24 illustrations is a color frontispiece (Persian cards). I believe that this is the Second U.S. Edition. The First Edition, previously sold in this shop, was also published by Dodd, Mead three years earlier in 1890; the first edition was blue cloth with a hand of cards embossed on the front cover and gold gilt on the pages. This edition has green cloth.

The book is 8vo, with a total of 207 pages. The text is relatively clean but does have pencil markings on a couple of pages and foxing on one page. The boards are lightly worn and rubbed, and there is a stain to the front cover. One of the color illustrations has separated from the binding. Overall the book is in good, perhaps very good, condition.

Thanks for visiting.
