Fascinating book written and published by Virginia and Harold Wayland in 1971 describing sketches from the17th century that were made by British artist Francis Barlow for a deck of playing cards. It was published in a limited edition of 200, of which this is number 90. The subject matter of the sketches, and the playing cards that were to have been made from them, is the “Meal Tub Plot,” a purported plot by the Pope and his minions to kill the Protestant King Charles II. It is generally agreed today that the alleged plot was a hoax and a fraud, but it was a major scandal in its day, and sketches of playing cards were made.
The book measures approximately 10” horizontally and 7¾” vertically, and has 40 pages of text. It has its clear plastic book cover, and the book and its cover are in excellent condition.
There is also a set of the playing cards themselves, as published in a limited edition by the Waylands, for sale in this shop (T00003746).
