Rare and attractive double deck of cards made by La Cubana S.A. of Mexico. Based upon the pictograms on the backs of the cards, it seems very likely that these cards were made on the occasion of the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. These pictograms were designed for use in connection with that event. However, these are not “official” Olympics cards. The Olympic rings are not on the cards, and the Olympics are nowhere mentioned. The cards feature illustrations of athletes participating in a variety of different sports, including winter sports, and I think that these decks celebrate international athletic competition without claiming an official affiliation with the 1968 Olympics. At the center of each of the backs is a trophy, but it seems closer to a World Cup trophy than an Olympic item. Each of the Jokers also has a figure of an Indian and vehicle tires, and it may be a reference to a part of Mexican history or Mexican sports history with which I am unfamiliar.
Each deck has 52 cards, plus the 2 Jokers noted. The cards are bridge size, measuring 89mm x 57mm, and come in the original packaging – a box bottom inside a plastic La Cubana sleeve.
The cards are in excellent condition, “as new” or very nearly so. The box has been taped at all four corners. The plastic sleeve is cloudy and has some wear.
Thanks for visiting.
