Excellent set of Dondorf’s beautiful “Java Speelkaarten” cards. These cards were first made in 1874 to commemorate the 25th year of the reign of King William III of Netherlands, and the court cards portrayed the Dutch Royal Family at that time. After the death of Queen Sofia in 1877, and William’s subsequent marriage to Queen Emma, a second variant was published in 1879 for Gumprich & Strauss of Djakarta in the Dutch East Indies, with Emma as Queen of Hearts in Sofia’s place. This deck is that second variant. Both variants have gorgeous scenic Aces, with views of locations in the Dutch East Indies.
The deck is complete with 52 suited cards (never a Joker). The cards are large and wide, measuring 94mm x 64mm, with gold gilt on the corners. The cards come in the original box.
The cards are in excellent lightly used condition, with most of the gold gilt intact. The box is in no better than good condition, reasonably clean for its age, but with considerable wear throughout and handwriting in pencil on the underside of the top flap.
Thanks for visiting.
