Mint double deck set of the “Schauspiel” cards made by Coeur in 1987, featuring the wonderful, humorous designs of artist Peter Becker on the Jokers, Aces and court cards. The Aces and court cards of each suit illustrate the characters from a particular play by a German author: “Nathan der Weise” (“Nathan the Wise”) by Lessing (Clubs); “Die Rauber” (“The Robbers”) by Schiller (Diamonds); “Der Zerbrochne Krug” (“The Broken Jug”) by Kleist (Hearts); and “Faust” by Goethe (Spades). In addition, the Deuces have illustrations of the authors.
Each deck has 52 suited cards, plus 3 Jokers. The cards are bridge size, measuring 87mm x 58mm, and come in the original Coeur plastic box inside the original cardboard sleeve.
The cards of one of the decks are mint and sealed; the other deck is no longer in its wrapper, but the cards are “as new.” The plastic box is in good, perhaps very good, condition, with scratches and clouding. The cardboard sleeve is in no better that good condition, with considerable wear.
