Excellent set of “The National Gallery (British School)” cards, an antique card game published c.1890 by J. Jaques & Son, featuring black and white photos of famous paintings by British artists in London’s National Gallery, including paintings by Turner, Hogarth, Gainsborough, Reynolds and Rossetti. For each artist represented there is a card giving the title of the paintings shown and brief biographical information about the artist.
The set is complete with 60 cards. If the game originally had a rules insert, it is missing from this set. The cards are large and wide, measuring 96mm x 70mm, and come in the original telescope type box.
The cards are in what I would regard as excellent used condition, especially given that the game is about 125 years old; the cards have edge wear and evidence of handling, and they are somewhat bowed on the vertical dimension. The inner box is clean with an abrasion, but missing its “top” so that it is open at both ends. The outer box is structurally complete and sound, but has considerable general wear, especially at the edges.
Thanks for visiting.
