Double Deck “Veiled Prophet” Playing Cards, Maker Unknown, c.1985
Wonderful double deck of cards made in 1985 to celebrate the “Veiled Prophet Ball,” held annually by the “Veiled Prophet Organizaton,” a somewhat controversial organization in St. Louis, founded in 1878. The backs of the cards show an illustration of the Ball. I have not found anything to suggest that the year 1985 was a seminal year in the life of the organization, but it seems clear that it is the year these cards were published. I do not know the maker of the cards, but I think the cards were made in the U.S. In addition to the Ball, the Veiled Prophet Organization sponsors a fair and a parade each year.
Each deck has 52 suited cards, including a unique Ace of Spades, plus 1 unique Joker, plus an extra card introducing the organization. The deck was made with only 1 Joker – a bit unusual in 1985. The cards are bridge size, measuring 89mm x 58mm, and come in the original custom box.
One deck is mint and sealed; the other is mint. I broke the wrapper on the open deck to photograph it and inspect it for this listing, and so know that it never had a second Joker.
