Beautiful set of cards, titled "Ballet Petrouchka," made by Grimaud (France Cartes) c. 1988, featuring striking designs depicting the characters and their costumes from Stravinsky's famous ballet, choreographed by Diaghilev. The designs were based upon those used in a 1948 performance by the Paris Opera, directed by Jacques Rouché, preserved in the Bibliothèque Nationale de l'Opera of Paris. The faces of the cards have black backgrounds, and the designs of the pips are very similar to those of the Russian "Black Paleh" cards. The identities of the characters are written in English and French on the sides of the cards.
The deck has 52 cards, plus 2 Jokers, plus an insert card introducing the deck. The cards are wide, measuring 88mm x 63mm, and come in the original box.
The cards are in excellent condition, "as new" or very nearly so. The box is in very good condition as well, with modest shelf wear.
Thanks for visiting.
