Mint, sealed double deck of wonderful advertising cards for Starbucks, featuring characters from Gary Trudeau's "Doonesbury" comic strip, in the original box. When first published and sold in Starbucks stores, the net proceeds from the sale of the cards went to U.S. literacy programs. I do not know who made them, and presume that they were published by a joint venture between Trudeau and Starbucks. The faces of the court cards, Aces, and Jokers can be seen at the World Web Playing Card Museum website (WWPCM #02506).
According to a description of the cards at Bob Lancaster's fine website, the decks were early recalled due to poor sales. The result is that these cards, though relatively recent (c.1999), are already hard to find. Those familiar with the "Doonesbury" strip will recognize the characters: Michael is the Kings, Kimberly the Queens, Zonker the Jacks, Duke the Ace of Spades, and Alex and Zipper the Jokers. Alex is also shown at the center of the backs of the cards. The design of the pip cards is also somewhat original.
Each deck has 52 cards, plus 2 Jokers. The cards are poker size, measuring 89mm x 64mm, and come in the original box.
As noted the cards and box are mint and sealed.
