Dondorf No. 150 “Mittelalter” (“Middle Ages”) Playing Cards, Hamilton, Hills & Co. "Unique," c.1889-1905
Gorgeous deck of Dondorf No. 150 “Mittelalter” (“Middle Ages”) cards, made by Dondorf c.1889-1905 for Hamilton, Hills & Co. of London, marketed under the name “Unique” Playing Cards. Hamilton, Hills was a distributor of the cards in the U.K., but the cards were made by Dondorf, whose name appears in the usual place for these cards on the Jack of Clubs. There are no indices on the cards which dates them prior to 1905, and these “Mittelalter” cards were first made in 1889.
The deck is complete at 52 suited cards (never a joker). They are large, measuring 92mm x 61mm, with gold gilt at the corners, and they come in the original Hamilton, Hills box, a different telescope type with a base and a top that lifts up and off.
The cards are in excellent lightly used condition, with about 50% of the gold gilt at the corners. The box is in good, perhaps very good condition. It is not the sturdiest, but is structurally intact and the embossing is still reasonably clear. The pictures reflect its charm and its shortcomings.
