Dondorf “Schweitzer Trachten” (“Swiss Costumes”) Playing Cards, Dondorf No. 174, c. 1900
Superb set of Dondorf's beautiful "Schweitzer Trachten" cards, Dondorf No. 174, made c.1900, featuring original designs on the court cards that are not of royalty, but rather depict persons from all walks of life in Swiss traditional clothing. The courts are double ended in the sense that each end has a different illustration; the two ends of each court card are not mirror images of each other. The Aces depict scenes of Switzerland and again each end of each Ace is a different scene.
The deck is complete at 52 cards (never a Joker). The cards are large, measuring 93mm x 60mm, with gold gilt at the corners. They come in the original box.
The cards are in superb condition, “as new” or very nearly so, without issues of any kind and with the gold gilt intact; I have sold a number of sets of these cards over the years, and the condition of the cards in this deck is as good as any I have offered. The box is in good condition, without side flaps and with some soiling.
