Superb set of "The Stage #65X" playing cards made by United States Playing Card Co. c.1896, one of the earliest of the "Stage #65" decks, with court cards indicating their ranks inside the suit symbols. Each of the Aces and court cards has 4 stage stars inside circles that replace parts of the standard court images, including the standard court faces. Altogether there are face portraits of 64 different stage stars.
The deck is complete at 52 cards, plus a Joker (Marshall Wilder). The cards are wide, measuring 88mm by 63mm, with gold gilt around, and come in the original box.
The cards are excellent condition, with almost all of the gold gilt intact. The outer box is in good, perhaps very good, condition – structurally sound, but with some soiling and wear. The inner box that holds/protects the cards is in excellent condition.
