Two decks of cards made by Altenburger Spielkarten Fabrik Schneider & Co. c.1930, for Norddeutscher Lloyd lines, no doubt given to voyagers on the SS Bremen. There is another double deck of these cards for sale in this shop with the same Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen backs (T00001720). However, that set has standard English pattern courts, while the double deck listed here has what the World Web Playing Card Museum calls “Hansa-Whist” pattern courts – a very beautiful pattern. The backs show 3 Norddeutscher ships – the Bremen, its sister ship the Europa, and the earlier built Columbus.
Each deck has 52 cards, plus a standard VASS Joker. The cards are large, measuring 93mm x 60mm, with gold gilt at the corners. The decks come in an original “Bridge” case, undoubtedly original to the cards and distributed by the shipping line with them, and the case has its original Eagle pencil.
The cards are in excellent lightly used condition, with some wear to the edges, including the corner gilt. The case has broken straps and generalized wear, and its primary value is as a maritime collectible.
Thanks for visiting.
