Excellent set of Congress 606 cards, with an art nouveau back called, “Rose,” made by United States Playing Card Company. I have dated the cards c.1905, because that is the USPC copyright date shown, but I note a cancellation on the 1894 tax stamp that appears to show a date of 1911. The back illustration appears to show the artist’s initials, but they are unclear to me (“SS”?). If the initials are “SS,” then the artist may be Samuel Schmucker, but this kind of “American Girl” look was done by many artists during this period.
The deck has 52 cards, plus 1 Joker. The cards are wide, measuring 88mm x 63mm, with gold gilt around. They come in the original Congress telescope type box.
The cards are in excellent condition, with minor evidence of handling, but with almost all gold gilt intact. The box is in very good condition with only minor shelf wear and very light soiling.
