Advertising deck made by Gemaco for Utah brewery "Wasatch Beers," the first brewery in Utah, formed by Greg Schirf in or about 1986. The deck was published as part of a somewhat controversial advertising campaign launched by Wasatch to promote a new brand of beer that it called, "Polygamy Porter." The campaign slogans, "Why have just one!" and "Bring some home for the wives!" were considered offensive, and it is reported that billboard companies in Utah refused to allow the ads on billboards in the State. Although the practice of plural marriage was banned by the LDS Church more than 100 years ago, and is illegal in the State, there are fundamentalist groups that formed after the ban, including the Apostolic United Brethren and the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and that continue the practice notwithstanding. In addition, the LDS Church teaches abstinence from alcohol, and so it is to be expected that in Utah a brewery poking fun at this part of LDS history would cause a bit of a stir.
The deck has 52 cards, plus 2 Jokers – all standard Gemaco cards. The cards are wide, measuring 88mm x 63mm, and come in the original Gemaco box.
The cards and box are "as new."
