Mint, sealed double deck of beautiful advertising cards made by United States Playing Card Company (Standard brand) for Island Records, featuring backs with an early rendition of the Island Record logo. The cards are a bit difficult to date. They appear to have been given as holiday presents, not sold commercially, and, although the cards were made in the United States, Island Records was based in London and it is likely that they were distributed within the U.K. Thus, even if these cards were made pre-1965, one might not expect to see tax stamps. The cards are housed in a plastic USPC case with an address "Cincinnati 12, Ohio, which suggests a pre-1963 date. On the other hand, the address given for Island Records on the cardboard box that houses the plastic box is "basing street london w11" and on the internet, it appears that the famous Basing Street Studio was built for Island Records c.1970. On balance, I am assuming that 1970 is very close to the date the cards were made, as Island Records began to emerge to become one of the most significant record labels in the history of British Music. Time and space do not permit a description of this legendary studio, closely identified with the early careers of Bob Marley, Grace Jones, and U2, among many artists.
Presumably each deck has at least 52 cards, plus 2 Jokers. The cards are bridge size, measuring 89mm x 58mm, and as noted, come in an original USPC lift up plastic box, inside an Island Records cardboard box.
The cards are mint and sealed, and the plastic box is in excellent condition, "as new" or nearly so. The cardboard box is in very good condition, with minor wear and very light soiling in a couple of places.
Thanks for visiting.
