Mint, sealed “Tournament Whist No. 63” cards made by Andrew Dougherty, but divided into pinochle decks and boxed as “Tournament Pinochle or Skat No. 630.” There are 2 sets of 32 cards (Ace, 7-King) in the original glassine wrappers, although the wrapper on 1 of the sets has loosened to the point that the cards can be inspected and photographed. The box has canceled tax stamps dating the cards to 1923. However, the cards themselves may have been made a few years earlier, as the Dougherty “Tournament Whist” cards are thought to have been made during the years 1900-1920. There is nothing in the literature available to me describing “Tournament Pinochle or Skat” cards. It seems clear to me that these are standard “Tournament Whist” cards, boxed for use in pinochle or skat tournament play. Frankly, it is slightly ironic, if not more, to have a “Tournament Whist” Ace of Spades provided for use in a pinochle or skat tournament.

As noted, the set is a complete pinochle set with 2 decks of 32 cards each (never a joker). The cards are bridge size, measuring 90mm x 58mm, and come in this “Tournament Pinochle or Skat” box.

As noted, the cards are mint and sealed, although the wrapper on one deck has come loose enough so that the cards could be carefully photographed. The box is in very good condition, structurally quite sound, with tax stamps intact and a clean sample card, but with a stain on one corner of the front of the outer box, and some generalized wear.
