Very attractive bridge set made by Brown & Bigelow, its Stancraft brand, including 2 decks of cards, 2 glass ash trays, a score pad, and a mechanical pencil. The set features the King of Spades and Queen of Hearts from the company’s Nu Vue designs on the backs of the cards, and the King of Spades on the the ash trays and the front cover of the score pad; ironically, the court cards in the included decks are standard Stancraft designs, not Nu Vue designs. B&B introduced its Nu Vue designs c.1960, and so I have dated the set to that decade. But it may be that this set was made later.
Each deck has 52 cards, plus 2 Stancraft Jokers. The cards are bridge size with gold gilt around. The set is housed in its original box. I have described the glass pieces as ash trays because that is how they are described on the side of the box, but it seems to me that they could serve equally well as small dishes for candies.
I do not believe that the set has ever been used, although the cards are no longer wrapped. The score pad does not appear to have had a sheet removed, and certainly the glass trays look perfectly new. By the same token, the box – never sturdy – shows some wear, and the plastic piece that covers it has signs of scotch tape that was obviously used to hold it to the box. There is also a ribbon that encircles the box and plastic piece, and it shows use from being removed and replaced around the item. None of these issues with the box affect the use of the set, but should be noted by anyone considering the set as a gift.
