Outstanding set of hand colored cards, with single ended courts, square corners, no indices, made in France c.1820. The Gatteaux shield is dated 1816, and so these cards can be dated to the years 1816-1827. The backs are solid beige.
The set is complete at 32 cards, probably made for Piquet (or perhaps Bezique), and the cards are small, measuring 83mm x 54mm. There is no wrapper.
The cards are in excellent condition, very lightly soiled throughout, but otherwise without issues or problems. The hand coloring is very beautiful. Images of all 32 cards are supplied to assist in evaluating condition.
This is one of 3 early French piquet decks, all dated c.1820, for sale in this shop (see also, T0000483, T00001813). Please compare all 3 decks as the hand coloration on each deck is different. This deck and listing T00001813 are cleaner than T0000483, but the colors on this deck and T00001813 seem to me to be slightly less vivid than T0000483. I have priced them all the same.
There is also a hand colored 52-card deck of French cards, c.1820, for sale in this shop (T00001815).
