In 1973, Vito Arienti, moving force behind high end Italian card maker Solleone, persuaded his friend Sergio Calloni, then Mayor of Barlassina and owner of the construction firm "Officine Calloni," to publish a deck of cards on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni. Manzoni was an Italian poet and novelist of the 19th century and the author of "I Promessi Sposi" ("The Betrothed"), the most famous of all Italian novels and one of the major works of world literature.
The result was this extraordinary deck of cards, made by the Plastic Cards division of Solleone, advertising Officine Calloni, featuring stunning designs by Rina Sernieri and Lucio Antonioli that are based upon illustrations by Francesco Gonin in the definitive 1840 edition of The Betrothed. The deck was published in a limited edition of 1500. The deck here for sale is number 1182.
The deck has 52 cards, plus 2 Jokers, plus a card introducing the deck. The cards are quite wide, measuring 90mm x 65mm, and are plastic. They come in the original hard plastic box inside a cardboard sleeve.
The cards, box and sleeve are all "as new." The cards were removed from their wrapper to be inspected and photographed for this listing.
There is also a double deck of these cards for sale in this shop (T00002754).
