Two decks of cards made by Altenburger Spielkarten Fabrik Schneider & Co. c.1930, for Norddeutscher Lloyd lines, no doubt given to voyagers on the SS Bremen. The cards include a beautiful Bechstein logo Ace of Spades, that I have not seen before, but that may be more common than I know. The decks are also interesting for the “tanned” look of the court cards. The backs show 3 Norddeutscher ships – the Bremen, its sister ship the Europa, and the earlier built Columbus.
Each deck has 52 cards, plus a standard VASS Joker. The box states that these are Poker decks, and the cards are wide, measuring 89mm x 63mm, with gold gilt at the corners. Each deck is in its original box.
The cards with blue backs are in exceptional condition, “as new” or very nearly so, with virtually all gold gilt intact. The cards with the red backs have greater edge wear, with corresponding loss of gilt, but in all other respects they are likewise “as new” or very nearly so. The boxes are really in excellent condition, except that there is mild soiling to the blue box, and a rustlike stain at a number of places on the red box.
Each deck is for sale separately for $40.
