Set of 4 British sterling silver mechanical bridge pencils in the original case. Each is marked "Made in England Sterling Silver" near one end, just beneath what is left of the 4 painted suit symbols that decorated the end of each. I am uncertain of the date of these pencils, but from the design of the pencils and the look of the box and its hinges and clasp, I am guessing that they date c.1930s.
Each pencil is approximately 3½" long. There is no lead in the pencils, but they all appear to turn properly. The box is a very light wood, or even a fiberboard material, with a fabric or even paper covering that is presumably intended to imitate horn or shell. The interior of the box has it original fabric – blue slotted felt material where the pencils are placed, and a padded linen to the underside of the lid.
The pencils are in very good condition, without dents or damage, except that much of the the paint of the suit symbols has worn away. The box has signs of age and wear and is buckling at the underside. The clasp and hinges work well.
