A magnificent pair of embroidery scissors made of 18k yellow gold, decorated on one side with flowers in white gold and leaves in green; on the other flowers in red gold and leaves also in green. The outside edges of the hoops are decorated in a foliage pattern in green gold. The bases of the blades have plaques mounted in engraved red gold, one with a floral spray, the other appears to be a sunburst with a flower.
Each hoop is struck with a maker's mark ("AB") and a horse's head for 18k items made in the French provinces between 1838 and 1919. This style of gold work, working in multiple colors to sumptuous effect, was very popular in France in the 1840s and 1850s. Excellent condition.
A corresponding pair of thread winders by the same maker will be listed separately.
