A large, finely carved netting case, or etui, with images of earth and sea. Four separate scenes carved in a twist pattern depict people or cherubs celebrating the earth's bounty: cherubs ride dolphins or fish from a pond; a woman holds a birdcage; a man holds a bird in one hand and a flaming heart in another, his tri-corner hat rests at his feet; a woman dances with a tambourine in front of a castle or church; a cherub picks fruit as a dragonfly flies overhead. Flowers, fruit, foliage and rococo motifs are interspersed throughout. One end is decorated with a bird and fruit, the other with shells and a mythical sea creature. The etui is English, from about 1760 to 1790.
A lovely piece in good condition. The cap shows one significant hairline crack, and three very fine ones mostly seen from the inside. The base of the cap has some tiny chips. The inside top of the main part has a small hairline crack.
