A rare little 18k gold pictorial thimble depicting de la Fontaine’s fable of the milkmaid and the milk pail. These little thimbles became popular in the late 19th century and were made by several different manufacturers. Most were in silver or silver gilt (vermeil), a solid gold one is rare. Decorated with waffle knurling and the design in relief, signed EM.G. Very good condition, with light scratching visible under a loupe, and consistent with age and use.
Hallmarked “AF” with a buffalo in the middle for Alfred Féau who used this hallmark from 1875 to 1913, and an eagle’s head mark for 18k gold items made in France.
