A very sweet, sentimental locket pendant in 15k gold, the central glazed locket is surrounded by ten ‘forget me not’ flowers, each set with five small turquoise cabochons. The bale has a matching Forget Me Not. The back is also glazed and opens and closes nicely. There is a beautifully woven lock of ash colored hair stored in the compartment.
Sentimental jewelry took on a language all its own beginning in the Georgian era with stones spelling out acrostic phrases such as ‘regard’ and ‘dearest’ in gemstones. The Forget Me Not became popular at the tail end of the Georgian era when styles and colors of gems and jewelry became more lighthearted.
This piece could have been a token of a loved one either during life or after death. Life was so fragile and fleeting that sentimental pieces such as these usually served both purposes – think of me while I am alive; remember me when I am gone – throughout the lifetime of both giver and receiver.
The locket is most likely English, has a French guaranty mark and tests as 15k gold.
