Very Fine Victorian Rose Gold Locket with Diamond ‘Ivy’ Motif, late 1800s
A very fine, large and heavy oval 18k rose gold locket, the cover decorated with a motif of a trailing ivy vine. Five ivy leaves and berries are set with thirty rose cut diamonds. The opening is “invisible” meaning that it is perfectly smooth all the way around - including the hinge – a mark of high quality. The reverse is smooth and blank. The interior still contains its two glass frames.
Ivy is symbolic of lifelong attachment, constancy, fidelity and love, and in French was often accompanied by the phrase “je m’attache” – I am attached to you.
French circa 1860s or a little later. Excellent condition, some light scratches consistent with normal wear. A small abrasion at the bottom of the front of the locket.
Hallmarks: Eagle’s head assay mark for 18k gold on both the bale and the inside lip of the locket. Traces of a maker’s mark on the ring.
Dimensions: 2 1/8” high including the bale, 1 1/8” wide
Gross weight: 27.7 grams
Gender: Female, Age Group: Adult, Color: gold, Size: YUGE
