A very fine mother of pearl and ormolu cased box in the form of a book, dating to the French Restoration period, namely the 1815 to 1830. The cover and back panels are inlaid with mother of pearl panels engraved with foliage. The cover is decorated with a gilded angel holding a banner "Souvenir", or remembrance. The spine is very finely decorated with motifs that were very popular at the time: two large vases with bouquets of flowers, pairs of cooing doves, torches a-flame and wreathes. The box opens to reveal an interior compartment lined with a mirror and hand marbled paper. This would most likely have held a necessaire, or sewing set, and been given as a gift to someone special.
Condition: Overall the box is in very good condition. The rear panel has two visible cracks and a very fine one, hardly visible. The panel is stable and in one piece and doesn't risk breaking.
Size: 70mm x 101mm x 25mm / 2 ¾" x 4" x 1"
