Outstanding huge cut steel ornament in the shape of a dragonfly -- a popular motif during the Art Nouveau period (Victorian transitioning to Edwardian era) -- this could be attached to a garment, hat or similar headpiece. 4 3/8" in length, 2 7/8" wingspan, this very light and flexible piece is intricately fashioned, with delicate loops for the wings, a pyramid shape encrusted with tiny brads near the head, long slender tail consisting of a double row of tiny brads, then a single row of larger brads. I love the long needlepoint stones in the wings.
I cannot see any evidence of pin or other fastening ever having been attached; the back of the piece is in exceptionally smooth and clean condition, free of any rust or other discoloration that one often sees with these old old pieces. The cut steel brads are all present, with some patination and occasional surface scratching consistent with age.
