This beautiful pin consists of rose-cut pyrope garnets. Garnets have a very high refractive index making them very sparkly stones. These Bohemian garnet pieces are amazing in person as they are incredibly sparkly in light. This makes them difficult to photograph well. Hopefully I've captured the beauty of this piece in the photos.
Pyrope garnets contain iron, among other minerals, which produces a blood-red color. The stones were favorites of Victorian jewelers, while those in Bohemia (the present-day Czech Republic) have used garnets cut from pyrope for hundreds of years. Bohemian garnet jewelry was very popular from the 1880s through the turn of the century.
This pin contains both round and oval rose-cut garnets. It measures 1-3/8" and has a 'C' clasp. There are no markings on this piece.
