This is an interesting find for the collector of Victorian children and young adult books - this is Sara Ellmaker Ambler's book entitled The Dear Old Home, published in 1906 by Little, Brown and Company in Boston, assumed first edition, illustrated by Thomas McIlvaine. It is a hardcover volume with 298 numbered pages and some advertising in the back. It is in excellent, clean condition, with a strong binding and clean, tight pages. It does have an inscription inside the front cover. Cover wear is very minor and considering the age, this book was well kept over the years.
Sara Ellmaker Ambler was born in 1866 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This book was intended for young adults and the story is set in of of the Amish communities in Pennsylvania. According to the summary in the back; "Serena and her brother, Dick, city children, upon a long visit to their grandmother, become acquainted with Beppie and Pharaoh, two Pennsylvania Dutch children. The love-games, quiet adventures, and the boy sports which are described in the story will please and entertain children."
The 8 illustrations are wonderful and the frontispiece still has its original tissue paper protection. This scarce antiquarian book would be a wonderful addition to your library or collection.
