This is a hard to find book, number 127 of a limited printing done by Wennawoods Publishing of Lewisburg, PA entitled Captured by the Indians, The Seldom Told Stories of Horatio Jones and the Benjamin Gilbert Family. It is a leather covered hardcover volume with gold gilt lettering that was published in 2003 as a reprint of the original 1903 edition of The Life of Horatio Jones and an original 3rd edition of A Narrative of the Captivity and Sufferings of Benjamin Gilbert and His Family, which was printed in London in 1790. Therefore, you will see variations in the text and the numbered pages match those of the original texts. Soldier boy Horatio Jones was captured by the Senecas in the Bedford County area of South Central Pennsylvania and was eventually adopted by them, even rising to the level of Chief. 12 members of the Gilbert family were captured in 1780 in Eastern Pennsylvania by Indians, taken north to Fort Niagara and finally released 2.5 years after their capture in Montreal and returned to Pennsylvania.
This book is in very good, very clean condition, with tight pages and a strong binding and a simply beautiful leather cover. Since it was published in a limited edition, it is hard to find. If you are familiar with Wennawoods Publishing, you will know they have made it their mission to preserve the history of frontier life in early America. This would be a great addition to your library or collection.
