This is a great work for the collector - this is Lee Bishop Jr and J. Robert Elliott's book entitled American Society Medals An Identification Guide. It is a hardcover oversized volume with its original dust jacket and a thick protective plastic cover over it, published in 1998 by Bishop & Elliott Publications of Santa Monica, Ca. It has 320 total pages and includes black and white illustrations of the medals and color illustrations of the ribbon bars. It is in very good condition with tight pages and a strong binding and minimal foxing, which is only present on the edges of the pages and only visible mainly when the book is shut. This is the first work of its kind to give such in depth detail regarding the insignia worn by members of American societies and orders, including hereditary, participatory and military. Considering that the medals can be called numismatic art, some being exquisite renderings in gold and enamel by old world craftsman, it seems odd that there is less information out there on them than coins, for example, but the authors have clearly attempted to right that situation. This hard to find book is a nice find for the collector and even includes blank pages at the end to record your finds and notes.
