This is at the second Octagon (New York) printing in 1980 of George Post Milton's book entitled The Eve of Conflict; Stephen A. Douglas and the Needless War that was originally published in 1936. It is a hardcover volume, blue wraps over boards with gold gilt lettering, with 608 pages, including the index. It is in very good, clean condition with minor cover wear, clean, tight pages and a strong binding. There is price sticker residue on the bottom of the back cover, but it is otherwise fine. It includes illustrations , including a frontis of Douglas. Assisted by the grandsons of the Little Giant, who provided the author with more than twenty thousand letters, as well as other numerous notables, the author has pieced together an interesting book that details Douglas's efforts to prevent the Civil War.
